Q&A with FibriTech

We recently spoke our newest AVF member Tomasz Borkowski, Dyrektor Produktu / Product Director at FibriTech to learn more about their biomaterial products.

Who is FibriTech?

FibriTech is an pioneer deep-tech and materials science company specializing in high-performance, eco-friendly, peat-free growing media and advanced bio-composites. Our revolutionary, patented manufacturing technology physically bonds natural organic fibers into 3D matrix without  chemical glues, synthetic binders, or environmental pollutants.

What is your biomaterial technology and product, and who is it for?

Our flagship product line, FibriAgri, features high-performance, organic growing media made from natural ingredients.

Designed specifically for professional horticulture, FibriAgri targets CEA facilities, vertical farming (VF) operators, and commercial nurseries. It provides the ultimate foundation for high-value precision crops – including microgreens, leafy greens, the rooting of cuttings, seedling production, and the acclimatization of delicate in-vitro plantlets.

What is unique about your biomaterial technology, product and approach?

Our competitive edge lies in manufacturing process and the resulting physical properties of the substrate, defined by the following key features:

  • 3D Shape: Built upon a spatial cellulose matrix, our substrate retains its shape and dimensions throughout the cultivation cycle. Its porous structure provides the room for both water and air required by root systems, while structural persistence enables pot-less cultivation to eliminate plastic waste.
  • Advanced Water Management: FibriAgri absorbs water in seconds while maintaining superior water retention. Its unique capillary structure naturally wicks moisture directly to the root zones where it is consumed fastest, ensuring even distribution. Unlike peat, which becomes highly hydrophobic when dry, FibriAgri rewets instantly. It is compatible with all modern irrigation systems, including ebb-and-flow, NFT, and overhead sprinkling.
  • Biosecurity: Because our process involves thermal treatment and uses zero chemical adhesives, FibriAgri is microbiologically clean. It is free of pathogens and pests (e.g. fungus gnats) and their eggs, providing a healthy start that traditional peat or coir simply cannot guarantee.
  • Biodegradability: Our material is fully bio-based. At the end of its lifecycle, it disintegrates naturally when transplanted to soil, can be composted, or utilized as feedstock for biogasification.
  • Verified Environmental Impact: We back our sustainability with data, not just claims. Based on an independent ISO 14040/14044 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), FibriAgri has a ~43% lower carbon footprint per kg compared to conventional white peat. Furthermore, our technology is fully compliant with the EU Taxonomy’s DNSH (‘Do No Significant Harm’) criteria across all six environmental objectives, ensuring a lower environmental impact without hidden trade-offs.

What is the potential of your biomaterial product and technology going forward?

The market potential is massive, driven by the urgent global regulatory shift away from peat in horticulture – including active and upcoming bans across the UK and EU. FibriAgri provides a highly scalable replacement that actually outperforms peat by offering superior water/air management and automation capabilities.

Beyond horticulture, our underlying binder-less 3D forming technology serves as a versatile industrial platform. It has the potential to disrupt multiple major industries by creating circular, bio-based alternatives for protective packaging, furniture components, construction materials, and advanced thermal or acoustic insulation systems, driving the global transition toward a circular bioeconomy.

What are your goals in the future?

In the near term, we are focused on scaling up production and driving widespread adoption of FibriAgri substrates across European CEA and VF markets. We continue to validate our products across a wider variety of crops and growing systems, transitioning our technology to full commercial qualification.

Looking ahead, we strive to become the global standard for responsibly produced, peat-free growing media. Simultaneously, we will leverage our proprietary machinery platform to expand our clean-technology manufacturing capabilities into new sectors, replacing fossil-based and synthetic materials with advanced bio-composites.

What are you looking for in the VF space?

In the Vertical Farming space, we are actively seeking strategic partnerships, collaborative R&D projects, and industrial development projects geared toward commercial implementation. Specifically, we are looking to connect with:

  • VF Operators and Commercial Growers: To conduct large-scale, real-world trials that demonstrate yield improvements, resource efficiency, and the operational benefits of our substrates in commercial settings.
  • Agri-Tech Integrators & Automation Companies: To co-develop seamless workflows using our material for automated production lines, including robotic post-processing (cutting, layout), seeding, transplanting, harvesting, and automated handling systems.
  • Circular Economy Innovators: To collaborate with partners who process plant materials to help us develop alternative, local sources of raw organic fibers (such us agricultural by-products). Integrating these renewable resources will allow us to  maximize circularity through locally-sourced supply chains for our substrates.
